Jennifer Thomas: 5 Tips to Truly E.N.J.O.Y. the Holiday Experience

Don’t spend another year stressed and pressed for time.

E – Energy: You must maintain your energy if you are going to make it through the holidays. With so many things going on you have to exercise, eat healthy (or as healthy as possible with all the junk food around) and get enough sleep, otherwise you are going to fizzle out before the holidays are over.

N – No: You’re going to have to say No to some things, whether it’s events, friends or even your kids. If you’re not careful you’ll allow yourself to be pulled in so many directions the holidays will fly by and you’ll never even know what happened. Prioritize parties and events and go to the ones that are most important to you and pass on the others…people understand everyone can’t be at everything. When it comes to buying your kids gifts, telling them no or convincing yourself they don’t need it can be hard, but say no if it will keep your from feeling stressed when you pay the bills next month.

J – Joy: Give joy to someone else. This time of year is as much about giving as it is receiving. We often focus on the receiving and giving to those close to us, but the truth is that giving to someone you don’t know or that is less fortunate than you is much more fulfilling than you can imagine. Studies show that doing for others can reduce stress and increase happiness in our lives. Providing joy to someone else doesn’t mean you have to spend money. So, if things are tight this year do something else, like help an organization that is sorting gifts for those in need or invite your neighbor who has no family over to your holiday dinner…there are lots of ways to bring joy to someone else…just stop and look around!

O – Organize: With the chaos of the season being organized is very helpful. Even if you’re not organized any other time during the year, now’s the time. Create lists for shopping. Don’t circle around town 5 times trying to decide what to buy for people or make multiple trips to the grocery store, when you could have done it once if you had made a list. Shop online if you can or call ahead to stores to make sure they have what you are looking for. Don’t procrastinate! Look at a calendar and plan out your days during the busiest time. This will decrease the chances of you forgetting about something.

Y – You: Take some time for yourself. Whether it’s 15 minutes of quiet time reading, a 30 minute walk or listening to soothing music. Just slow down enough that you can clear your mind, refocus and enjoy what’s happening. This is very important and can help reduce stress!

I hope you have a very blessed and enjoyable holiday!!

What are you doing to ensure that you truly enjoy the holidays? What are your holiday plans? Please share!

Jennifer Thomas: Angels Among Us

I received this story in an email that’s going around and wanted to share.

According to the email it was written by a Metro Denver Hospice Physician: I was driving home from a meeting this evening about 5, stuck in traffic on Colorado Blvd., and the car started to choke and splutter and die – I barely managed to coast into a gas station, glad only that I would not be blocking traffic and would have a somewhat warm spot to wait for the tow truck. It wouldn’t even turn over. Before I could make the call, I saw a woman walking out of the quickie mart building, and it looked like she slipped on some ice and fell into a gas pump, so I got out to see if she was okay. When I got there, it looked more like she had been overcome by sobs than that she had fallen; she was a young woman who looked really haggard with dark circles under her eyes. She dropped something as I helped her up, and I picked it up to it to her. It was a nickel.

At that moment, everything came into focus for me: the crying woman, the ancient Suburban crammed full of stuff with 3 kids in the back (1in a car seat), and the gas pump reading $4.95

I asked her if she was okay and if she needed help, and she just kept saying ‘I don’t want my kids to see me crying!’ So we stood on the other side of the pump from her car. She said she was driving to California and that things were very hard for her right now. So I asked, ‘And you were praying?’ That made her back away from me a little, but I assured her I was not a crazy person and said, ‘He heard you, and He sent me.’

I took out my card and swiped it through the card reader on the pump so she could fill up her car completely, and while it was fueling, walked to the next door McDonald’s and bought 2 big bags of food, some gift certificates for more, and a big cup of coffee. She gave the food to the kids in the car, who attacked it like wolves, and we stood by the pump eating fries and talking a little.

She told me her name, and that she lived in Kansas City. Her boyfriend left 2 months ago and she had not been able to make ends meet. She knew she wouldn’t have the money to pay rent Jan. 1, and finally, in desperation, had called her parents, with whom she had not spoken in about 5 years. They lived in California and said she could come live with them and try to get on her feet there.

So she packed up everything she owned in the car. She told the kids they were going to California for Christmas, but not that they were going to live there. I gave her my gloves, a little hug and said a quick prayer with her for safety on the road. As I was walking over to my car, she said, ‘So, are you like an angel or something?’

This definitely made me cry. I said, ‘Sweetie, at this time of year angels are really busy, so sometimes God uses regular people.’

It was incredible to be a part of someone else’s miracle. And of course, you guessed it, when I got in my car it started right away and got me home with no problem. I’ll put it in the shop tomorrow to check, but I suspect the mechanic won’t find anything wrong.

Sometimes the angels fly close enough to you that you can hear the flutter of their wings…

Psalms 55:22 ‘Cast thy burden upon the Lord, and He shall sustain thee. He shall never suffer the righteous to be moved.’

We’ve all read stories like this before and many of us have experienced the help of an angel or been used by the angels to help someone else in need. Imagine what the world would be like if we allowed ourselves to be used more often. What experiences have you had where you feel like you were sent an angel or able to help someone that was in dire need?

The following is one of my favorite poems…so simple, yet so true. Not sure who it’s by:

Angels Around Us
A helpful stranger
A reliable friend
You met an Angel
When you needed one then

Here around us on earth
Are Angels everyday
To remind us of God’s love
With Angelic acts and ways

Remember that Angel
In your thoughts, words and deeds
Give the love of your Angel
To others in need

Be an Angel to someone today!!

Jennifer Thomas: Can you say "OVER REACT"

Let me set the scene before I get started. I live in an apartment complex, which has assigned parking spots. I’ve lived here for a while and have never had anyone park next to me, except maybe once and they were picking someone up. I assumed and still do that it’s not assigned to anyone. It’s a tight turn into the spot, so occasionally my back tire is on the line or just over. So this morning when I go outside to walk Carson, I notice there’s something on my windshield stuck under the wiper, so I’m naturally curious and go see what it is. As I get closer it’s obvious that it’s a note. So I’m really wondering what it could be. Mind you I’m just waking up, so I’m still a little groggy and it’s a beautiful cool morning outside…so I pick up the note and look at it and read: YOURE AN ASSHOLE FOR TAKING 2 LANES. That was like a slap in the face I wasn’t expecting, not that I really ever expect slaps in the face, but still. It was one of those moments when you just kind of stop and look around dumb founded and read it again and look around a little more. And then I look and my back tire is a little across the line…but does that warrant a note calling me an ASSHOLE…I definitely think not. I mean if it was Christmas Eve and I’m at the mall taking up 2 spaces then maybe, but it’s a little harsh considering there are a ton of other parking spots five feet away. I wanted to get mad, but I quickly decided that just because this person was obviously having an awful day and I got caught in the cross fire, I was not going to let them take me down. So I immediately started imagining them waking up late, rushing around the house and accidentally stubbing their toes on the door (which made me smile), and arguing with their spouse (who I really feel sorry for) and so on, in hopes of gaining some empathy for this person. Well that was all good and it kept me from getting mad, but that was still uncalled for and way overkill. A note that read: You’re taking 2 lanes, would have made the point just fine. I get it! So there was obviously more to it than just taking two spots. I prayed for the people that came into contact with this person for the rest of the day. And although I’ve never seen anyone park there, anyone who does will be suspect of authoring the note, at least for the next few days! And now I must thank the person because who ever wrote it gave me a great topic to talk about today!! Here's the actual note:

So I want to know about the times people have over reacted with you or that you’ve really over reacted to something small. And if you believe the note was justified I’d like to hear from you too! Or if you know who wrote it or can identify the handwriting…Tell Me!! Share your stories.

Jennifer Thomas: Wouldn't it be so easy if we could "Just Deal With It"

Why is it so hard for us to accept certain things about ourselves? We all have things or circumstances we wish we could change…but know that it’s impossible. While there are many other things we can change but we don’t. We tend to put our energy and effort into trying to control the things we can’t change instead of controlling the things we can. Why is it so hard for us to just embrace these things?

Is it because it proves to us we don’t have the ultimate control? Well, the truth is we don’t. It’s not our job to control them, it’s our job to accept them and use them. They are there for a reason, most of the time it’s a reason bigger than we ever take the time to recognize.

These are the things that are in our life to teach us, to help us grow, to bring us to the realization that God is in control and that He gave us these “gifts”, that most of the time we view as a hurdle or a curse. And if we view them as a hurdle, that’s what they will be…road blocks and obstacles in our life that rob our joy and stunt our growth. But if we can shift our perceptions and attitudes and see them as the gifts they are, they are wicked powerful and can teach us things about ourselves that we will not be able to learn in any other way.

They are gifts and miracles in our life that God uses to lead us to Him, to show us His love, to teach us to forgive ourselves and others, to teach us about compassion, empathy and sympathy. He uses these traits, issues or circumstances to open us up to wisdom and knowledge about our life that we wouldn’t otherwise be able to understand. These things we hate are our gifts from God. At first glance they may not look like a gift, but it’s like getting a birthday present that’s wrapped in dirty, ripped paper…if you can get past the packaging and open it up it could be the best present in the world. But if we never accept it and never open it we may miss out on the joy and greatness of the gift.

True acceptance of ourselves or circumstances isn’t easy and can take lots of time and just when you think you’re cool with “it”, it can rear its ugly head again. So in order to be accepting and stay accepting, you must know and look for the good that comes from it and when you find it stay focused on those good things. You must live from a place of constantly seeing it as a blessing, because we wouldn’t trade a blessing or a great gift for anything!!

What about yourself or your circumstances do you have a hard time accepting? Please post your story as a reply or send it to us here.

Jennifer Thomas: Purpose of Marriage

The other day I was reading an article on marriage, and according to Paula Roberts with CLASP, there is a disagreement about the purpose of marriage in the 21st century.

Some people think the primary goal is to find a soul mate. And if they do and the marriage is good, any children born will be happy, but if it isn’t good, the children will suffer and will be better off if the parents separate or divorce.

Other people see the children’s well-being as the main goal of marriage. They believe that even if the parents aren’t happy, in the absence of violence and abuse, the couple should remain together and provide a stable home for their children.

And still others think the purpose lies in both…finding happiness for themselves, as well as focusing on the well-being of their children. These people tend to look at each situation and decide whether, as a couple with children, they should remain in the relationship.

What do you feel is the purpose of marriage? And once children are involved does that change your view of its purpose? Share your thoughts here in the blog or send them privately by clicking here. Look foward to hearing from you.
